OpenAI and its ChatGPT are making waves in the tech sphere, despite the concerns of worrisome experts. The influence of ChatGPT on the culture, technology and our day-to-day lives is immense, and it’s only been like four months. There are already apps going live on Play Market fully written by ChatGPT, while some bloggers use ChatGPT to create businesses. The possibilities with this viral Chatbot are virtually limitless, and with the implementation with ChatGPT 4.0 we have yet to discover the full range of AI capabilities. Unfortunately, not everything is so shiny with OpenAI.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an open-source AI tool made by OpenAI that’s basically allowing you to have a conversation with a learning AI model. The chatbot is trained to give you answers on various topics you give it. The main difference between ChatGPT and say your typical search engine like Google, is that instead of links that may not contain the information you were looking for, the AI chatbot will give you all the information in a conversational manner, with further explanations if you ask for them. ChatGPT-4 is the most advanced version of OpenAI’s creation to date, providing you with more creative and more precise AI chatbot.
Why was ChatGPT banned in Italy?
Earlier in March, Center for AI and Digital Policy published a complaint stating that OpenAI’s model fails to comply with the standards laid out by FTC, urging OpenAI to halt the further development of ChatGPT. The report says that the chatbot is “biased, deceptive, and a risk to privacy and public safety.” Among the people supporting this claim are Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and none other than Elon Musk, who allegedly at one point wanted to gain control of OpenAI and run it himself.
However, some of these concerns can’t just be ignored and considered groundless. FTC has released a series of articles on how Artificial Intelligence makes it harder to discern what’s real from what’s fake with the amount of generated information and how worse the situation may become, which can lead to mass fraud and deception. Hence, Italy has become the first Western country to ban ChatGPT entirely.
The Italian Data Protection Authority announced that California-based OpenAI unlawfully collected personal user data and did not have an age-verification system protecting minors from being exposed to illicit material. Italian regulators ordered OpenAI to block Italian users from accessing ChatGPT, to which OpenAI complied and disabled the chatbot for users in Italy. OpenAI reported that they are committed to protecting people’s privacy. It is still unknown whether Italy will lift ban on ChatGPT, but it is likely if OpenAI updates their privacy policy and become more transparent about their data collection practices.
